Obituary: In Loving Memory of George Richard Batten Sr.


George Richard Batten Sr., 78, of Cedar Brook, NJ passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024 at Samaritan Hospice, Voorhees, NJ surrounded by his loving family.


Born in Camden, NJ, George was raised in West Berlin, NJ before settling in Cedar Brook, NJ where he established his own family.


George began his career at Owens Corning Fiberglass, where he excelled as the Production, Warehouse, and Shipping Manager. His leadership extended to his role as head of the union, where he skillfully negotiated for the welfare of his colleagues. Later in his career, George served Camden County as a 911 Operator, offering critical assistance and solace to those in distress, and even aiding in the delivery of newborns.


George was a community figure when it came to softball and baseball in Winslow Township. If he wasn’t out there coaching his daughter Danielle or his son George Jr, he was behind the plate calling games. With his fair and consistent calls, George earned the respect and love from both teams making him everyone’s favorite umpire.


Beyond his professional and community endeavors, George was a devoted Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles fan. Witnessing two Phillies World Series victories and celebrating the Eagles' historic Super Bowl win with his family brought him immense joy..


George's other great passion was his meticulously tended yard featuring his beautiful hostas, which became a neighborhood hallmark. He also cherished family card games, where his competitive spirit shone brightly.


Son of the late Catherine ( nee Chavanne ) and Joseph L. Batten, Sr. Beloved husband of 54 years, his “Sweetheart” Joan Batten. Preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph, Harold, Frank, and Albert Batten. Loving father of Danielle Batten ( John ) and George Batten, Jr ( Stephanie ). Dear brother of sister Marie Haines. Also, survived by his cherished “Girls”, sister in laws, Palma Williams and Maryann Dugan along with his other brother and sister in laws and many nieces and nephews.


George Richard Batten Sr. will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his family, his community, and his passions. His kindness and generosity will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.


Visitation will be held Thursday July 18, 2024 from 9am till 11am followed by the Mass of Christian burial at 11am at St. Simon Stock Parish/Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Campus 178 white Horse Pike, Berlin, NJ 08009. Inurnment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.


In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Samaritan Hospice or St. Simon Stock Parish in memory of George.
